Scene 2My brother
My older brother Reuben
The star athlete of the school team
How many trophies bore his name?
Nationals 5th, District 1st, Steeplechase Champion…
Almost an entire wall
Which made him famous
For everyone passed it to get to the canteen.
My brother Reuben
The star athlete
Locked inside that box.
My brother Reuben
Captain of the school team
The record-breaker of the 2004 Steeplechase Nationals
The wonderboy who snatched three seconds off
the memory left by
Andrew Chee the Legendary
No one had conquered that limit for the past six years since it entered reality.
But my brother did.
He triumphed over that memory.
My brother Reuben
The conqueror of the impossible
Locked away inside that box.
My brother Reuben
The king of the basketball court
He ruled, oh yes, he did
the way he dodged,
swung,
rammed
and in a few seconds, crossed that court.
The determination when he trained
was proof of his passion.
My brother ruled his game.
My brother Reuben
The champion of his game
Locked away inside that box.
My brother Reuben
The gentleman of the family
The one who scored 8 distinctions in exams
My friend
Confidante
My brother
Two years would not gap us
He taught me how to play PS2
Teased me
Pulled my braids in Primary School
He helped me with Add Math
Trigonometry
and listened to what I had to say
when no one else bothered to.
My brother Reuben
Taken away from us
And locked away inside that box
forever –
in an eternal sleep-
the one thing we could be grateful for,
as his pain was over.
